EDIT By Russy... (Might as well...)

Post any neat tricks, tips, and similar things that you may have discovered on your LG Vu.

  • To get on the factory test menu type in DialPad: 277634#*#
  • You can drag the clock/calendar around anywhere on the home screen
  • When texting in the QWERTY mode, you can save time sending your message by just clicking the "Call" button (rather then pressing 'OK' then 'Send')
  • The icons on the top screen next to the battery meter are funstional and can be used to change things such as your ringtone, used to open the music player, check a text message, etc.
  • You can touch the clock on your main screen and when it gets a little yellow round icon with a clock in it you can touch that and set an alarm. (useful for setting a timer)
  • Messaging
    Messaging> Templates> Signature
You can create a signature with your name, email address, alternate numbers etc, and add to every text message you send
  • Email
    Mobile Email
You can select some of the limited providers, and then setup your OTHER email providers online to forward their mails to those accounts included on your phone, ie Gmail forward to Yahoo, Work Pop mail forwarded to Yahoo. They were talking about this on the e-mail board, but the alert times are sporadic at best. I also have the GMail app installed, for when I MUST respond to GMail mail from GMail. It's kinda roundabout, but it works.
  • Internet/ Media Net
    MEdia Net> Browser Settings> Accounts
You can add a new account that opens directly to your preferred start page. Mine is iGoogle (htt;://www.google.com/m/ig) Create a new one so you don't screw up the default accounts settings.
  • Blocking irritating Calls
    Settings> Call> Call Reject
A number has to be in your contact list (mine are Idiot 1, Idiot 2...) but in this menu you can add these numbers and NEVER receive a call from them again. Your phone completely blocks them. Can you say "no screaming banshee calls from a crazy ex girlfriend"?
  • When switching between tasks (the button to the left of the battery indicator), if you launch an application such as Opera Mini and want to task out, hit that task button and then JAVA (game controler icon). It will act as if you hit the menu button, but you did it with an application open.
This ONLY works if you launch your programs from the menu, not from TASKS > Applications method.
You can do other stuff after you hit BACK such as take a picture, look up contacts, etc.
  • When viewing pictures in landscape mode you can drag your finger across the picture to go to the next one like on the ipod touch.
  • You can use volume buttons to scroll up and down in a menu. (Easier to browse through internet pages)
  • When you need to pull out your address book in the task menu: Open up call, enter a digit to fill the field, goto options, save, UPDATE EXISTING. (when in call, just press options, address book)
  • When texting to input a number, instead of scrolling through the letters or having to switch to the number menu, you can simply hold down the button for a sec and it will input the number, for instance wanna enter 3 hold down the 3DEF button to get "3".
  • If you need a phone number, and don't want to use the internet to get it, text the listing to GOOGL (46645) and it will send you the listing & phone number via text within seconds. I.e. "John's Pizza Buffalo NY" texted to GOOGL will return all/many of the local "John's Pizza" locations with address & phone number.
If you're in your local service area, you don't even need to add the city & state...it will identify that by either your immediate location (doubtful) or your area code.
    Search Google From the Road
Google SMS offers more than just driving directions: You can text your way to stock quotes, movie show times, currency conversions and much more. The trick lies in remembering the proper syntax to receive the information you want. To access Google’s glossary, for instance, your message should read “Define” and then the word. Looking for a particular business in your area? Send the business name (or category, such as “pizza”) and the Zip code or the city and state. If you can’t remember the proper format for a particular inquiry, just send “help” or “tips” to Google SMS (dial 466453), and the service will send you a cheat sheet.
A quick google of "google text tricks" returns tons of cool text info.
  • When texting, and you want to yell hold the arrow up key on the key pad, and this put the letters in all caps.
  • Alternate to Google Text Message searching, you can use YellowPages Text Message Search by sending a text to 411411 in Canada or 97411 in the U.S.
How to find:To find a BUSINESS in Canada send keyword(s): pizza, florist
To find PIZZA near YOU send keyword, postalcode:pizza, M5V2T6; pizza, M5V
To find a TAXI in a CITY send keyword, city: taxi, toronto; taxi, vancouver
To find a business by reverse look-up send the ten digit phone number: 4164125999; 416-412-5999
    More info on: http://sms.yp.ca/
  • download a application called "filelock" for the Vu on getjar.com. Will hide ANY file you don't want shown
  • download a application called "Meboy" (google it) to play gameboy games on the Vu.
  • download an application called "Super Bluetooth Hack V1.8" to hack other phones (works awesome on the Vu)
  • download an application called "MemoryUp Standard Edition" to defrag the files on the Vu and make things go faster
  • When using the Slide theme, if your screen freezes up (can't move the menus or access them) than you can fix it by pressing the RED End button on the bottom
  • When viewing a picture, tap the picture and you can zoom. Once zoomed, you can drag the picture by touch
  • On the slide theme, if you slide the menus up and hold it (so the clock doesnt show), then press the lock button and take your finger off the screen, then unlock the phone and the only thing showing is the wallpaper(no clock, no menus)
  • Click right under the picture you received or somewhere around the bottom and drag up pushing towards the left. It will turn into a negative effect. It might be kind of hard to get it in the beginning but what your trying to do is highlight the picture so just do as you think you will be highlighting it. And it will turn into a negative picture. For at least until you tap it again.
  • When surfing the web, if you want to go to the previous page(Back), hit the "c <-" button (the middle one).

The two little icons next to the battery meter open up a couple sub-menus.  You can change ringtones and open up the music player and such.

Whoo-hoo!  I got one...

You can touch the clock on your main screen and when it gets a little yellow round icon with a clock in it you can touch that and set an alarm.  Useful for setting a timer.

Unfortunately, there's no option for the ring tone used so it uses the weird default.  Perhaps there's a way to set the default tone for alarm?

Awesome thread. These aren't so much tips are they things I've found that make using the phone easier and more enjoyable for me. I'm sure they've all popped up in various places on the board before.

  • Messaging
    Messaging> Templates> Signature
You can create a signature with your name, email address, alternate numbers etc, and add to every text message you send
  • Email
    Mobile Email

They were talking about this on the e-mail board, but the alert times are sporadic at best. I also have the GMail app installed, for when I MUST respond to GMail mail from GMail. • Internet/ Media Net

Can you say "no screaming banshee calls from a crazy ex girlfriend"?

tasking

when switching between tasks (the button to the left of the battery indicator)

if you launch an application such as opera mini and want to task out, hit that task button and then JAVA (game controler icon)...VOILA, its like you hit the menu button, but you did it with an application open!

this ONLY works if you launch your programs from the menu, not from TASKS > Applications method.

you can do other stuff after you hit BACK such as take a picture, look up contacts, etc.

problem is, you can only do this once.

when you go back to opera mini or other launched application, and you go back to your tasks, the JAVA button you used earlier disappears and you cannot do any other complicated tasks one more time without exiting opera mini and starting all over.

TRICK:

after you use a task from the JAVA button, be sure to return back to the APPLICATIONS window before tasking back into opera mini or anything else with the TASKS button.

this will keep that JAVA button in the task list so you can keep tasking back and fourth =)

hope this helps!
