CU920 - Cingular (ATT)

« on: September 17, 2008, 03:09:02 PM »

I got the Vu last week, and I was curious about the MobiTV service, so I clicked it. Saw the demo, had enough, and decided it wasn't worth anything to me.

I decided to "dump the pesky MobiTV button" but like allot of posters in that thread, I hated the annoying Orange MobiTV "signal icon' showing up on my phones homescreen.

So after looking around the phones filesystem for a while, I think I have found a way to get rid of that icon WITHOUT having to do a full reset on your phone.

It works for me, but it may not for you. So:
Do this at YOUR OWN RISK!

Open your favorite Phone filesystem viewer (BitPim, EFS Explorer, ...Whatever)

Step 1a) Browse to this directory:

/brew/mod/1073741825/profiles

Note: The numbered directory above may be different on your phone.
There should be 3 numbered directories in the "/brew/mod" folder, the "profiles" sub-directory is most likely in your lowest numbered directory. Please post if you see this differently.

Step 1b) Inside of that "profiles" folder, you should see 2 things:
"index.dat"
some randomly numbered / lettered directory

Step 3) DELETE the randomly numbered / lettered directory from that location and all of it's contents (which should be 3 more directories, and several tiny files).

Step 4) Reboot your phone

Thats it!

I WOULD NOT DO THIS IF YOU SUBSCRIBE TO THE MOBI TV SERVICE
As it will most likely wipe out your subscription details, forcing you to re-setup everything you have configured. Although, since I never subscribed, I can't say that is for sure, but there looks to be a pretty good chance of that happening.

Anyways, hope this helps make your Vu'ing better! Cheesy

^ No, but it will show whether or not you have TV signal.  Pretty annoying.

If you have a data plan, no.  If you don't, then standard data rates apply.  Those are really high, btw.

I dont know the details of your data plan, but my ATT is $.01 per KB (that's ten bucks a meg!).  Didn't sign up for data on my wife's phone plan - she downloaded 2 rings and 2 games, was like .95 MB.  Every time you launch a browser window the meter starts, and browsing counts just like downloading!

I just looked at the coverage map for TV service.  It's not even available in my area, so even if I WANTED to use it, I'd have to drive 50mi to the east.

For the AT&T TV service, I'm pretty sure they just charge you monthly - something like $15 for a few channels and $35 for premium channels. When you turn on the TV option, that's when they try to get you to purchase a plan.

I don't get service anywhere close to me, either. The towers have to catch up with the technology, it seems.

I bought the $15 unlimited internet service for AT&T and I'm loving all the videos I can download. And it's FAST, too.

OK.... to try and steer this thread back on to it's original topic.

I noticed that damn little TV signal icon being displayed on my phone again last night.
It just flickered on and off randomly, and only for a couple minutes (2-3 minutes, max).
Haven't seen it since.

Has anyone else done this mod to their phone?
And has anyone else seen this re-appearing behavior?

Something really weird just happened... I got rid of the TV button the day I got the phone and I never pressed the TV button so I never had the orange tv dot on the screen. Now today it pops up out of no where on the screen?!?  So I restarted my phone and now its gone thankfully! Anyone else encounter this???

Im wondering if the reset even reverses enabling the tv function? I thought the reset only erased memory and settings?
